In hydraulic engineering, intense free surface breakups have been observed to develop in high-speed open channel flows, resulting in a mixed air-water layer near the free surface that grows with the development of self-aeration. This region is characterized by a substantial number of droplets coexisting with an induced air layer above. Little information about this droplet layer is currently available and no practicable approach has been proposed for predicting the parameters of the induced air layer based on the related flow structures in the droplet layer. In this research, laboratory experiments were accordingly conducted to observe the detailed droplet layer development in terms of layer thickness, droplet size, and frequency distributions under comparative flow conditions. Based on the simplified droplet layer roughness determined using the experimentally measured mean droplet size, the classical power-law of boundary layer theory was applied to provide an analytical solution for the air velocity profile inside the air layer. The relationship of air layer growth to droplet layer thickness, which is a key factor when determining the air velocity distribution, was also established, and the analytical results were proven to be in reasonable agreement with air velocity profiles presented in the literature. Plastic products, e.g., plastic bags, plastic bottles, and other plastic materials are widely used in people’s daily life and industrial production worldwide since they are cheap, easy to get, and convenient for all-purpose of transportation or movement. The wide application of plastic products also brings a lot of problems. The significant adverse consequences include plastic waste pollution and waste of resources, which pose a high threat to social development and environmental protection. In this research, a social survey involving 267 people was conducted to examine how certain factors reduce plastic waste pollution in Kinshasa. Statistical Product and Service Solutions were employed to analyze the data gathered from the survey. The results indicate that all the factors or strategies for reducing plastic waste pollution have a significant positive impact on plastic waste pollution reduction. The environmental factors have the highest contribution to the control of plastic waste pollution with an impact of 88.8%, followed by Government policy with an impact of 42.3%. Economic factors have the least impact contribution, with an impact of 36.0%. This finding and conclusion could be used as a framework for implementing plastic waste pollution management strategies or developing waste management systems....
This work presented the removal of nitrate ions in aqueous solution based on silica nanoparticles (SiNPs), which were extracted from rice husk ash. The optimal conditions for nitrate ion adsorption were studied including pH, contact time, adsorbate concentration, and amount of absorbance. The surface morphological analysis showed that the SiNPs extracted (purity of 98%) were around 50nm with a surface area of 30m2·g−1 and adsorption average pore width of 2.72 nm, offers possibility for high capability of nitrate ion removal. The experimental results showed that the nitrate ion capability of adsorption was obtained around 14.22 mg·g−1 with a concentration range from 0 to 25 mg·L−1 based on optimizing conditions including pH 6, contact time of 50 minutes, and SiNP dosage of 0.15 g vol−1. In addition, nitrate ion removal based on SiNPs will provide considerate benefits such as the reducing costly sample pretreatment steps, less time-consuming, and reliable methods for processing nitratepolluted water....
During this research, it was verified that small dams play an important role in groundwater sustainability and agriculture. The main objective of this study was to assess the impacts of the Wadi Tendahah dam on groundwater and agriculture. Proper planning and management of small dams may improve sustainable agriculture in the Tendahah region. The study also found that the construction of the Tendahah Valley Dam on an impermeable rock layer had a major role in the lack of groundwater recharge, especially in the dry seasons, and this, in turn, affected agriculture in its study area. Given the positive and negative impacts of the Tendahah Valley Dam or similar, the appropriate place for the construction and maintenance of small dams should be chosen periodically....
Absorption of colored dissolved organic matter or detrital gelbstoff (aCDOM/ADG) and light attenuation coefficient (Kd490) parameters were studied at La Parguera Natural Reserve in southwestern Puerto Rico, before and following Hurricanes Irma (6–7 September) and María (20–21 September) in 2017. Water quality assessments involving Sentinel 3A ocean color products and field sample data was performed. The estimated mean of ADG in surface waters was calculated at >0.1 m−1 with a median of 0.05 m−1 and aCDOM443 ranged from 0.0023 to 0.1121 m−1 in field samples (n=21) in 2017. Mean ADG443 values increased from July to August at 0.167 to 0.353 m−1 in September–October over Turrumote reef (LP6) with a maximum value of 0.683 m−1. Values above 0.13 m−1 persisted at offshore waters off Guánica Bay and over coral reef areas at La Parguera for over four months. The ADG443 product presented values above the median and the second standard deviation of 0.0428 m−1 from September to October 2017 and from water sample measurement on 19 October 2017. Mean Kd490 values increased from 0.16 m−1 before hurricanes to 0.28 right after Hurricane Irma. The value remained high, at 0.34 m−1, until October 2017, a month after Hurricane María. Analysis of the Sentinel (S3) OLCI products showed a significant positive correlation (rs = 0.71, p = 0.0005) between Kd490_M07 and ADG_443, indicating the influence of ADG on light attenuation. These significant short-term changes could have ecological impacts on benthic habitats highly dependent on light penetration, such as coral reefs, in southwestern Puerto Rico....
